Replacing a few cells can result in a short-term fix until the next worse cells fail. And the labor time to get to them and replace them is slightly more than replacing the pack with new. So, replacing a few isn't recommended unless it's your own labor (free) and you enjoy doing that sort of thing.

Can a Prius battery of that vintage be rebalanced or have cells or modules replaced? Atomic Auto reports the HV regen ECU failed and 3 cells more than a volt down in said Prius. They want to replace all for $2700, which probably isn't unreasonable, but not sure an '05 is worth it.
