Yesterday at lunch, I went out to the freeway and tried the AV station 
there again...and it errored out.  So they haven't fixed it yet.  One 
difference between this one and the one in Newport that worked is that 
the one in Newport still has the old lever style connector, so maybe the 
bug is in a newer/updated version of the charging stations?  In any 
case, they're working on it, but it's not fixed yet...
